Statement of Intent

At Sunshine Pre School we aim to provide a curriculum which actively promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance.

British values are embedded into the heart of our day-to-day curriculum.  They are demonstrated through all our practices and are actively promoted within our Equality and Inclusion Policy and our Behaviour Management Policy.  This ensures we are providing a foundation from which our children can grow into well rounded adults who help to develop an accepting, tolerant, diverse society.

Democracy

We will:

  • Provide opportunities to develop enquiring minds in an atmosphere where all questions are valued.
  • Value children’s views and encourage them to value their own and each others opinions.
  • Provide activities that involve turn-taking, sharing and collaboration.
  • Teach children to work together, to value contributions from others and to jointly make decisions and solve problems.

Rule of Law

We will:

  • Help and support the children to understand their own and other’s behaviour and its consequences.
  • Helping them to distinguish right from wrong
  • Work with children to create their own rules and codes of behaviour.
  • Encourage children to manage responsibility for upholding their own rules.

Individual Liberty

We will:

  • Provide opportunities for children to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and increase confidence in their own abilities.
  • Provide a range of resources and experiences that allow children to explore the  language of feelings and responsibility.  Reflect on their differences and understand everyone is free to have their own opinions

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

We will:

  • Promote diverse attitudes and challenge stereotypes ie by sharing stories that reflect and value the diversity of children’s experiences
  • Provide resources and experiences that challenge gender, cultural and racial stereotyping
  • Value faiths, cultures and races, creating an inclusive environment
  • Aim to visit places of interest and engage in activities in the wider community
  • Share and discuss practices, celebrations and experiences
