Sewing Together For Wellbeing

TakePART In the Sewing Room is a project which aims to improve members wellbeing through sewing.  Securing a grant from Newground Together has allowed the project to thrive!

The project was initially set up by a Mental health Peer Support Worker who’s own mental health had been improved dramatically by learning to sew she wanted others to experience this.  She felt that sewing as part of a group would also be a fantastic way to achieve the five ways to wellbeing!

Group members are encouraged to share their skills and learn both from and with one another, in a friendly and relaxed environment.  The group is supported by volunteers with extensive sewing experience, so even those new to sewing can feel confident when embarking on their first project!

The members are also empowered to shape their sessions to their own wants, needs and interests, within the scope of the project.  For example, deciding on joint monthly projects to sew together.

Machine sewing, hand sewing, embroidery and cross-stitch are all catered for, so there’s lots for members to try their hand at, and to date the group has made a wide range of items including garments, home decorations and crafts – even selling their makes to raise additional funds to put back into the project!
